Hello! Welcome to Critical Recap! I’m Dani Carr, the Critical Role Lore Keeper. Let’s dive into our recap of Critical Role Campaign 3 Episode 112: The Assembling of Legends!

BONUSES

In the morning, Imogen contacts the leader of the Volition, Rashinna, to let them know they’ve returned with allies to attack the Weave Mind. Rashinna tells her they are planning a massive detonation and are hiding in the Villems, a neighborhood. Look for her lieutenant Gaz Tomo. Meanwhile, Sprinkle is returned to Jester and Fjord tries to hide that he accidentally killed Pâté. He eventually confesses and Laudna teases him before revealing that Pâté is just fine, resummoning him.

Bells Hells decide to chance using the quintessence array several times, despite the possibility it will break with consecutive uses. Ashton goes first, taking in Sorrowlord Zathuda’s blade Dusk Hunger. This grants Ashton a permanent +2 increase to their Dexerity and additional fire damage on a melee attack. Orym is next with the harness, and with Laudna’s gentle approval, he takes in Otohan’s sword, Ishta the Summit Blade, in a poetic moment. He too gains a permanent +2 to his Dexterity, as well as some conditional extra force damage.

AN OLD ALLY

With the quintessence array stable, they leave the tower and return to the Jagged Edge. Caleb casts seeming, making them all look like Reilorans and Bormodos. The Ruidians of Kreviris are all preparing to be transferred to Ruidus and the city is in the process of uprooting. Bells Hells lead the Mighty Nein through the city and head towards the Villems. They come upon a shrine of Exandrian items, where Ruidians leave offerings. To their surprise, they see the petrified statue of Planerider Ryn among the items.

Fjord makes an illusion of a red tornado appear, scattering civilians and causing soldiers to bunker down. He and Caduceus head to the shrine as Dorian casts thunderclap and warding wind around the soldiers, playing up the illusion. The distraction allows Caduceus to cast greater restoration on Ryn. This works, but Ryn’s arm is gone. Ryn panics in confusion and casts dimension door, leaving the area.

Imogen messages her, letting Ryn know that she has been a statue and that Bells Hells rescued her. Ryn thanks her, appreciating the assistance but not wanting to meet up. The two groups continue their walk, spotting a full grown vidulch, a giant insectoid creature. They find a blocked off tunnel into the Villems, which Jester burrows into as a polymorphed dire mole. She makes a path and Bells Hells guide everyone to the former Volition entrance, which allows the Mighty Nein, Dorian, and Braius to see Vaterra Kreviris for the first time.

GO TIME

Imogen messages Gaz Tomo, who tells her to meet him at the ceramic tower below. Dorian asks how everyone will get out after Predathos is defeated – both teams have potential solutions with teleport and plane shift. Both teams head down into the city via the broken window and find Gaz, who brings them inside to safety. He explains the Volition’s plan – they’re going to cause a massive detonation to try and pierce the Prime Pillar to take off a chunk of the base of the Arx Creonum and see if it will collapse.

The Mighty Nein are to find the Weave Mind up in the Arx Creonum, while Bells Hells are to go below and find the Hallowed Cage. The teams want the Volition to demolish the Prime Pillar sooner so that they can time their infiltration with the Exandrian assault on the Malleus Key. Gaz, whose mind is a little unkempt these days thanks to tangling with Liliana’s psychic powers, goes to talk to Rashinna about moving the time table up.

Fearne spies on Gaz, overhearing him talking to Rashinna and someone else. Rashinna will come talk to them herself. Gaz returns and receives his first ever cookie and nip of alcohol from the Mighty Nein and Bells Hells. Imogen and Jester call Allura, telling her that it’s time to start the assault down in Exandria. Allura will inform the forces.

VOX VACANCIES

The story then flashes back to Keyleth of the Air Ashari in Vasselheim. She talks to Vex’ahlia de Rolo and they agree that it is time to get Vox Machina back together after thirty years. They want to do some fighting, let their rage out, and free Vax’ildan from the orb. Vex is determined to get her brother back from the Matron, but Keyleth has accepted that Vax is never returning and tries not to get her hopes up. It’s too painful. Vex is proud of her and the work she has done.

Vex thinks her husband Percy will jump at the chance to fight again. Keyleth has been unable to reach Scanlan and is unsure where he is. The two find Grog Strongjaw and Pike Trickfoot at a bar and Pike says she and Scanlan are on the outs. She has lost count of their divorces by now and thinks they don’t need him. They try to call Scanlan via sending, but the spell is resisted. Pike doesn’t want to see him, depressed and down about her looks, and is unsure if she still has feelings.

They find Cerkonos of the Fire Ashari reading in his chambers. Keyleth invites him to join them, feeling that two Ashari leaders will be a boon to their chances. He agrees and the group travels to Whitestone via Tree Stride. Vex and Percy’s eldest daughter Vesper directs them to find Percy in his office and Vex informs her that they’ll be getting more involved in the fight than expected. Vesper will take care of the others.

WHITESTONE ENDURES

They find Percy, who has been keeping tabs on Scanlan. He knows that Scanlan connected with his friends in Dr. Dranzel’s troupe and began traveling east towards Wildemount. Keyleth scries on his daughter Kaylie, only learning that she is asleep in a tavern somewhere. Urged by the others, Pike reaches out to Scanlan again, pretending to be horny. This gets him to respond, revealing that he is between Asarius and Bazzoxan. Keyleth scries on Dr. Dranzel and they find Scanlan’s location.

Percy writes some notes and calls his youngest daughter Gwendolyn. He tells her they will be back soon and that she is in charge, but to not tell the others. He tells her to gather the others and meet them at the Sun Tree. He opens his safe and grabs a key, which he takes to his lab and retrieves his inventions. Grog tries to break into Percy’s safe, triggering a trap that forces him to run around screaming that he tried to rob Lord de Rolo.

Vox Machina head outside, where the reunion of these heroes in Whitestone prompts a bit of a parade. They arrive at the Sun Tree, where all five de Rolo children meet them – Vesper, the twins Wolfe & Leona, Vax’ildan (nicknamed Freddie), and Gwendolyn. Vex and Percy say their goodbyes and explain they are going to fix what happened to Uncle Vax. He cannot stay trapped. It’s dangerous where they are going, but they have survived many times. Their children are strong despite them. Whitestone endures, Percy calls as Vox Machina go through the portal.

SADDLE UP

Vox Machina arrive on the road outside of Bazzoxan, where they hear hooves in the distance. These are Scanlan’s Silver Saddles, a group made up of six riders – Dr. Dranzel, Kent Plucker, Lionel Gayheart, Jameson the painter, and Keg. The group is entirely centaurs, including Scanlan, who has purple fur. Scanlan cast true polymorph on them all, as he’d wanted to go on a road trip. They started on the Menagerie Coast and traveled across the Dwendalian Empire and into Xhorhas. Scanlan has seen so much! He’s even learned he was wrong about goblins.

Scanlan has been too focused on his midlife crisis to notice that the world is ending. Vex updates him on everything, but Pike tells him to just go back to partying. Scanlan confesses that he didn’t know what to do after their latest divorce. He was trying to find his spirit, since Pike said he didn’t have one. He wants to be vital and inspire Pike again, having hoped that he could rediscover his purpose – but saving Vax is the purpose.

Scanlan wants to know something, though. Do they want him? Or do they just want his magic? Grog says they want Scanlan himself. They tried so hard to find him. Pike declares that it’s just for his magic. That’s all good enough for Scanlan. He’s in. The group hugs and Vox Machina officially reunites, ready to save Vax from his torment within the orb.

That is it for Episode 112 of Critical Role!

FINAL THOUGHTS

  • Incredible to see Vox Machina again! It’s like no time has passed at all.
  • Vesper de Rolo normally has white hair – just a little error in the magic of role play!
  • Shout out to Robbie Daymond for his work in making Cerkonos absolutely incredible. He fits in with Vox Machina like a glove.
