HYPE! CANDELA OBSCURA – OUR NEW HORROR TTRPG SHOW PREMIERES MAY 25TH!
Written by Nicole on May 9, 2023
We’re incredibly excited to finally share with you all a HUGE project that we’re especially proud of as it’s a first-of-its-kind collaboration in all aspects of our creative company: Candela Obscura ! We’d welcome you to The Fairelands ourselves, but the Lightkeeper of this story has more information to share (if you dare)
Now that you’re officially up to speed, brave investigator, read on to uncover everything we’ve learned so far about this secret order.
What is Candela Obscura?
Our records tell us that:
Candela Obscura is an ongoing monthly horror drama that follows an esoteric order of investigators as they use centuries of knowledge to fight back against a mysterious source of corruption and bleed. Leveraging gaming as a story mechanic, the series features the Candela Obscura tabletop roleplaying game from Darrington Press, which is built on the Illuminated Worlds system.
This TTRPG show is set in a fictional turn-of-the-century inspired region known as The Fairelands, a place of terrifying magick. At the beginning of each episode, an inciting incident occurs, prompting a team, or circle, of investigators to uncover and solve the mystery at hand.
This means that it’s a completely standalone series – you can jump right in on whichever episode you’d like and don’t need to be caught up on any of our other content to enjoy the story.
The invitation is yours to accept.
Who are our storytellers?
Each episode will open with our Lightkeeper, Taliesin Jaffe, serving as a steward for the audience and providing episode prologues. In the world of Candela Obscura, a “Lightkeeper” is seen as an enlightened veteran that guides the brave individuals recruited by this secret order through the darkness and provides each circle with their mission.
What is Candela Obscura the game?
The show features the Candela Obscura TTRPG from Darrington Press, which uses the Illuminated Worlds System.
We can’t wait for you to see this new game in action, so to help provide some added context to the basic rules, we’ll be releasing a Candela Obscura Quickstart Guide! It’ll give you a basic rundown of the game, the setting, the characters, and even an adventure to play through at your own tables!
You’ll be able to download it for free Thursday, May 25th ahead of the premiere. PLUS, (if you’re more of a visual learner) our very own lead Game Designer, the amazing Spenser Starke, will walk you through everything you need to know in our How to Play video over on our YouTube channel that same morning.
And, keep an eye out – Candela Obscura’s core rulebook will be officially released by Darrington Press sometime at the end of 2023.
What CAN You Expect?
While the show is steeped in the genre of gothic horror, ancient evils, and the encroaching magickal bleed, it’s not overly scary – it’s more supernatural! In any case, some themes and situations that occur in-show may be difficult for some to handle. If certain episodes or scenes become uncomfortable, we strongly suggest taking a break or skipping past that part of the content. Take care of yourselves first and foremost <3
If you’d like to engage with the community during the show, be sure to join our moderated chat on Twitch or use the hashtags #CandelaObscura for general Candela discussions across social media and #CandelaSpoilers for anything that may contain spoilers for the episodes.
When & Where Can You Watch Candela Obscura?
Candela Obscura premieres May 25th at 7pm Pacific on our Twitch & YouTube channels and continues on the last Thursday of each month. The podcast and YouTube VOD will be available two weeks after each episode’s initial broadcast.
As you can tell, we’re trying out all sorts of new things with Candela Obscura including changes to our delayed release schedule. If you want to be able to watch it right away you can always catch the broadcast live for free or subscribe to our Twitch channel for instant VOD access. We’ll of course keep you up to date with any programming over on our socials.
That’s everything we can share with you, for now, investigator. You’ll have to report back your own findings as this next chapter is revealed, so stay close…
BEFORE WE PART...
We want to give a special shoutout and thank you to our incredible team of creatives for leading this project. Candela Obscura was originally created by Taliesin Jaffe and Chris Lockey, with Spenser Starke and Rowan Hall serving as our lead designers and writers. Our very own Steve Failows serves as our director and co-produced this project alongside Maxwell James. This has truly been such a labor of love with so many talented and passionate people behind it and we can’t wait for you all to finally have the chance to step into this new mysterious world with us.
