Weāre thrilled to announce something very different and excitingā¦ a new narrative audio series that weāve broughtĀ into the foldĀ –Ā MIDST! Originally released in 2020,Ā MidstĀ is an immersive, semi-improvised sci-fantasy series in which three mysterious and unreliable narrators spin a tale about complicated antiheroes making bad decisions in a world on the edge of disaster.
Weāre truly such fans of this story and the talented creators behind it: an anonymous trio known collectively as Third Person. Through this partnership, Midst will be completely re-released! In addition to the audio format, which has been fully remastered with updated sound and music, weāll also be presenting beautiful, lightly-animated video editions of EVERY episode, featuring all-new artwork from a variety of stupendously-talented artists includingĀ Ricardo Bessa,Ā Lenka Simeckova,Ā Sam Bosma,Ā Artem Chebokha,Ā Lap Pun Cheung,Ā Will Kirkby, and more!

SO TELL ME, WHAT EXACTLY IS MIDST ABOUT?
Weāre so glad you asked! In this series, three mischievous narrators will take you on a surreal, space-western journey about the doomed planet of Midst that spins on the border between two halves of the cosmos: the dazzling bright atmosphere called āThe Unā and the sea of dark otherworldly fog called āThe Fold.ā
Life is simple for most of the planetās inhabitants… until an influential and shadowy society known as The Trust takes an interest in Midst and sparks an unexpected chain of events, intertwining the lives of a crotchety outlaw, a freakishly-virtuous cultist, and a weird diabolical bastard. This excellent story has unsolved murders, cult brainwashing, supernatural darkness, bright spots of hope, found families, and rich world-building.
Also, the moon is about to fall out of the sky and cause reality to eat itself alive. And thatās just the start of where we begin with season one! The first two seasons of Midst are ready to go, and the team is hard at work on the third seasonāso whether this is the first youāve heard of it or youāre a long-time listener, we think youāll really enjoy all there is to come!
WHO ARE THESE MYSTERIOUS NARRATORS?
Midst is recounted and created by the immensely talented performance and production studio known collectively as Third Person. These three friends originally created the universe ofĀ MidstĀ as a TTRPG setting for themselves to play with and fell in love with the narrative they created. They eventually decided to pursue it as a podcast for everyone to experience and used the rules of improvisation to create a totally original dialogue and story.
They are multi-talented narrators, artists, producers, and storytellers, and we couldnāt be happier to collaborate and partner with them! Itās deeply meaningful to us to continue to broaden the kinds of stories told at Critical Role by welcoming other creatives into our world.
HOW INTERESTING! WHEN & WHERE CAN I FIND MIDST?
Weāll be re-launching season one (and eventually season two) of Midst starting with the first episode on April 11th!
Throughout the week, the first three episodes will roll out on the Critical Role YouTube Channel and your favorite podcast streaming app! Our YouTube releases add gorgeous, lightly-animated scenery to each episode and provide a new sensory dimension to this audio drama.
This will be the release schedule for our free feeds on launch week:
- Episode 1: April 11th
- Episode 2: April 12th
- Episode 3: April 13th
However, if you want to get a jump start AND support the project, youāll have the opportunity to Join the Fold as a paid subscriber and gain access to the first five episodes instantly on April 11th! Paid subscribers will receive an ad-free experience and early access to an array of lore-expanding bonus content known as the Appendices. Youāll be able to sign up on the Midst website.
After launch week, new episodes will air weekly on Wednesdays (aka the MIDST-le of the week) for the 19 episodes of season one. Paid subscribers remain two episodes ahead of the free feedsāso for instance, on April 19th, free feeds will see Episode 4 released while paid feeds will receive Episode 6.
