LIVE CLOSED CAPTIONS ON TWITCH

Written by on June 10, 2019

We’re happy to announce that Live Closed Captions are coming to Critical Role on Twitch every Thursday night — starting ASAP with our Thursday, June 13th broadcast! Thanks to a few innovations from our friends at Twitch, we’ve partnered with a Live Closed Captions service. A professional stenographer will be on-hand every Thursday night to bring you closed captions immediately as the show unfolds, live and in the moment.

Enabling Live Closed Captions on Twitch is relatively easy on desktop browsers: simply click the CC button on the video player to turn them on. (The CC button will only be present when captions are available on a particular live stream or video).

Android users will find this process just as simple, but mobile users on iOS devices will need to enable Closed Captions + SDH in their Settings under Settings > General > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning. (Functionality on consoles like PS4 and Xbox One is currently limited).

Once Closed Captions are enabled, you can adjust a variety of settings to improve visibility, including caption size, color, placement, and more. Your settings will be saved and used to display captions any time they are available on a stream (or if you re-watch a Past Broadcast from a stream that was captioned). You can change your caption display setting by clicking the Gear Icon on the video player and selecting Closed Captioning from the Player Options menu. You’ll find a selection of preset display options as well as tabs where you can adjust each setting individually.

If you’re one of the many Critters who has benefited from and enjoyed our closed captions on YouTube, you may notice some changes in the style of the presentation of our closed captions as we refine this process. For instance, live stenographers utilize an “all caps” system of transcription, so the style guide of our VOD captions will reflect this in the weeks to come. And, as mentioned in our April update, we still have a team of paid professionals on-hand who will work with our Live Closed Captions service to provide you with the best (and most accurate) subtitles for every episode of Critical Role on YouTube.

For more information on Live Closed Captions for Twitch, visit their Guide to Closed Captions. And catch Critical Role live every Thursday night at 7pm Pacific on twitch.tv/criticalrole.

The quest for greater accessibility is a work in progress; thank you for your continued patience and support as we strive to make our Thursday night broadcasts more fun and inclusive for all!
